How Whisper Creek Golf Club was almost an amusement park

Whisper Creek Golf

Whisper Creek Golf Club was almost a very different kind of amusement park.

The land on which the club sites today was originally slated to be site of Six Flags Great America. However, when the time came to survey the property ahead of construction, it was learned that the ground was too soft to hold up the mammoth roller coasters developers were expecting to build. In other words, the coasters would have slowly sank into the ground.

Soft soil is bad for that kind of construction, but isn't bad for a golf course. Eventually, Billy Casper and Greg Nash teamed up to build the 7,100-yard, links-style course in suburban Chicago.

And, oh yeah, Six Flags Great America was eventually built -- about an hour away.
