On Sunday, I will get to experience a first in my 40 years of life. I will have the honor of celebrating Father’s Day with my first child.
In October of last year, my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our son Harrison. Very shortly after his birth my mind, like so many other fathers, began to conjure up images of his future and the times we will share together. I was the third golf professional in my family and in the midst of my 25th year employed in the golf industry. You can easily see why some visions involved us spending many great moments together golfing. While he will ultimately decide if he will play golf long term, I will do my best to get him hooked on the game because of the opportunities the game can provide an individual.
Take me as an example. Golf has provided me career growth for 25 years, given me the opportunity to live in and travel to all areas in the United States, presented me with the opportunity to meet and golf with Hall of Fame athletes from numerous sports, has helped forged many of my lifelong friendships and, most importantly, blessed to meet the love of my life through golf. Golf may not provide my son with as many opportunities as it has me over the years but I will assure him that it will facilitate some great friendship and experiences like so many golfers have enjoyed.
So Harrison, when you are ready to tee it up daddy will be there to place that first peg in the ground. I will never expect you to be the fourth golf professionals in our family; I just hope you love golf as much as your father!
