Golf Management Monthly: December 2015

GMM December 2015

Dear Friends,

No lumps of coal here as tens of thousands of golfers are stuffing their stockings with Billy Casper Golf’s loyalty passes, reward cards, invites to holiday-themed events, lesson packages and much more.  After all, BCG’s high-powered marketing engine touches one of every eight public golfers in America.

News and notes from our herd:

Season’s Spend

Raise a glass of egg nog to the golf industry that is benefiting from more shoppers making a list and checking it twice:

  • Cyber Monday set a single-day record of more than $3 billion in online sales
  • Amazon will add 100,000 to its workforce this Christmas
  • The National Retail Federation forecasts a 3.7% jump in December spending
  • More than half of U.S. retailers plan to employ seasonal workers, up 43% from 2014 and the strongest fourth-quarter hiring in nine years

Other upward-trending economic indicators like higher wages and lower gas prices are contributing to significant purchase upticks:

  • Car sales hit all-time highs as Americans now drive more than 3.1 trillion miles per year
  • Hotel bookings are up 5% with an increase in year-round travel
  • Restaurant revenues rose 8.5% as more families have discretionary income to dine out

Top Teachers

Some of the nation’s best instructors call BCG courses home.  Rebecca Dengler of Ed Oliver Golf Club (DE) and Des Mahoney of Centennial Golf Course (TN) were among Golf Digest’s recently-released “Beat Teachers in Your State” list.

Dengler is a three-time LPGA Northeast Section “Teacher of the Year” and provides complete game coaching by collaborating with top professionals in fitness, nutrition and behavioral sciences.  Mahoney is a two-time “PGA Teacher of the Year” and uses the latest game-improvement technology for instant feedback.

A happy golfer is a returning golfer, and our passionate team of instructors excel at creating and filling player development programs that produce results, revenues and smiles.

Lights, Camera …

Action – that’s what we bring to our courses, consistently elevating their brands in the public eye.

CBS News’ “Good Morning Sacramento” visited Lincoln Hills Golf Course (CA) to test ride the exciting GolfBoard.  Broadcast to an audience of more than 3,000,000, California’s capital city tuned in for a live demo of the industry’s hottest product.  A day later, General Manager Ryan Peterson and his team could barely keep the surf-inspired, motorized golf vehicles in the cart barn.

Tiger Talks

In a rare one-on-one interview, Tiger Woods discussed his highs and lows on and off the course with TIME magazine.  The former World No. 1, who turns 40 on December 30, is slowly recovering from a second microdiscectomy surgery to repair his ailing back.  Click HERE to read the in-depth Q&A that touches on his passion for golf, uncertain future, deep love for his children and “fantastic” relationship with ex-wife Elin Nordegren.

Planet Protectors

BCG superintendents are smiling from recent reports that golf courses have reduced water usage by 21.8% since 2005.

They proudly help lead charge in preserving our world’s most precious resource.  Among active projects is the installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system at Delcastle Golf Course (DE) where maintenance teams precisely manage water distribution through advanced software.

Our agronomy teams also plan and execute conversions to heartier strains of grass – like TifEagle Bermuda which now covers the pristine greens at Ocala Golf Club (FL) – for higher drought resistance and consistent seasonal playability.
